Travel Information

Entry Requirements:

  • A valid passport with 6 months left before expiration at the time of you trip is required. (An original U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal and 2 additional forms of picture id are accepted for entrance into Mexico, but a passport is strongly recommended.)
  • No visas are required for U.S. citizens entering Costa Rica or Mexico
  • No vaccinations are currently required for entry into Costa Rica or Mexico, consult with your physician for more information.

Flight Information:

The first and last day of your adventure are travel days. Plan to arrive after 12 PM on the first day, and depart after 10 AM on the last day.

You have two flight itinerary options for Costa Rica:

Arrival in Liberia (Recommended)

The best approach is to fly into Liberia (LIR) directly from the U.S. Many airlines fly into Liberia including Delta, Continental, American Airlines and Northwest Airlines. We highly recommend flying into Liberia for a few reasons: it is easier and faster, there are no surfboard size restrictions (surcharges do apply, check with your airline), and it is usually cheaper by the time you add the roundtrip airfare from San Jose to Tamarindo.

Arrival in Tamarindo via San Jose

If you cannot find a suitable flight into Liberia, the second option is to fly into San Jose, Costa Rica, and take a connecting flight to Tamarindo Airport. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time to catch the last flight of the day, otherwise you will have to spend the night in San Jose. Typically the last flight to Tamarindo from San Jose is 3:50 PM during the high season (November–April) and 3:30 PM during the low season. Many airlines fly into San Jose from the U.S. including Delta, United, Lacsa, Taca, Continental, and American Airlines.

Sansa and Nature Air are the two airlines with service between San Jose and Tamarindo. These flights run between $142 and $160 round trip during the high season and are a little less during the low season. Note: These airlines allow 2 surfboards under 7 feet, depending on space availability. Check with the airlines for baggage restrictions.

Plan to arrive into Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) on the afternoon of the first day, before 9pm. Most major US airlines fly into Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, some directly. If you are bringing boards, surcharges apply. Check with your airline in advance for baggage restrictions.
Alaska Air has good itineraries from the west coast of the U.S. and reasonable board charges, and we recommend booking online at AlaskaAir.com for the best rates.
